From 5 to 7 December 2022, the international scientific conference 'Biodiversity and sustainable transformation of industrial regions and energy security' was held at the Luxor Hotel in Lublin, funded by the Ministry of Education and Science under the 'Excellent Science' programme - module: support for scientific conferences. The conference was held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Education and Science.
The event brought together representatives of the mining community and experts from the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, as well as mining scientific institutions - the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology and the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The main objective of the conference was to promote sustainable thinking about the extraction of raw materials critical from the point of view of national energy security, as well as solutions allowing non-invasive for nature development of industrial areas created as a result of exploitation of energy resources.
The lectures presented national and international experiences of the raw materials industry in terms of standards and tools for the implementation of a modern concept for the management of Europe's strategic raw materials deposits for the sustainable provision of new resources and their legal protection. The presence of many experts from academia, research institutes and industry ensured that the event was interdisciplinary and focused primarily on the exchange of experience and substantive discussion.
During the meeting, a cooperation agreement was signed between the UMCS, ITG KOMAG, IGSMiE PAN and Lubelski Węgiel "Bogdanka".
These organisations will work together to develop and implement a computerised system for monitoring and forecasting the impact of hydrological changes on the environment in rock masses transformed by human activity. The aim of the initiative will be to increase the efficiency of free management and strengthen the potential of small-scale retention.
